Coney Island Brooklyn guide
Summer 2026
What to do, where to eat, How to experience the real coney island
By Lola Star– a longtime Coney Island business owner
If you only experience Coney Island as roller coasters, hot dogs, and tourist crowds…
you’re completely missing the real magic of the place.
After spending over 20 years as a business owner on the Coney Island boardwalk, I’ve learned this:
Coney Island is not really about the rides.
It’s one of the last places in New York where public life still exists at full scale.
Different generations.
Different cultures.
Different dreams.
All spilling onto the same boardwalk beside the Atlantic Ocean.
And somehow, despite all the chaos, it still feels deeply human.
This is my local guide to experiencing the real Coney Island in Summer 2026

Is Coney Island Worth Visiting in 2026?
Absolutely. But not because it’s polished.
Coney Island is worth visiting because nowhere else in NYC combines:
- beach culture
- historic rides
- public art
- immigrant food culture
- old-school New York energy
- nightlife
- street performance
- ocean atmosphere
- and collective public life
One minute it feels like complete chaos:
music, grills smoking, ride lights, crowds everywhere.Thirty seconds later:
you’re staring silently at the Atlantic Ocean with the skyline behind you. That constant transformation is what makes Coney Island unforgettable.
How To Experience Coney Island Like a Local
The biggest mistake tourists make is trying to “do” Coney Island too efficiently.
This neighborhood works best when you stop trying to control it. Walk the boardwalk first. Let the environment unfold gradually.
The real experience is the spectacle of humanity that unfolds before your eyes. And the unexpected discoveries at every turn.
Coney Island rewards wandering.

5) Ride The Wonder Wheel and walk through the path behind the Wheel onto the Bowery (another great photo spot on Jones Walk)

8) Watch the sun set on the beach

Best Food in Coney Island 2026
Yes, Nathan’s is historically iconic. But more recently they are a large international corporation. Some of the best food experiences in Coney Island come from supporting the independent local businesses that still keep the neighborhood alive.
Best Local Food Spot
Doña Zita
Get tacos at Dona Zita. Coney Island was created by immigrants, artists and small businesses not corporations pretending to be local.
So skip the cultural appropriation and support the real thing.

MARGARITA ISLAND
If you want to experience the real spirit of old Coney Island culture, go here.
Margarita Island was created by the legendary creator of Shoot the Freak — one of the most iconic and chaotic pieces of old Coney Island folklore from the early 2000s.
Inside, the walls are covered with:
- vintage memorabilia
- old boardwalk photos
- carnival artifacts
- decades of Coney Island history
It feels less like a polished tourist bar and more like living neighborhood memory.
They’ve also become one of the most vibrant community spaces in the neighborhood, hosting:
- drag brunches
- wild karaoke nights
- artist gatherings
- Pride celebrations
- local community events
Places like this are what keep the soul of Coney Island alive.
WHAT MOST TOURISTS
GET WRONG
ABOUT CONEY ISLAND
1. Trying To Do Everything Too Fast
Coney Island is not a checklist neighborhood. The magic is in wandering.
2. Only Staying Inside Luna Park
The surrounding boardwalk, beach, people, and side streets are just as important as the rides.
3. Leaving Before Sunset
Nighttime is when the neighborhood becomes most emotionally alive.
4. Only Eating at Chain or Corporate Spots
Support local businesses whenever possible.
That’s what keeps Coney Island culturally alive.
